You are currently using your eyes to read this, right? I assume. Eye strain is common among full-time virtual assistants who spend extended periods looking at computer screens. Like everyone else, virtual assistants need their eyes to operate effectively. But common is not the same as it is okay to hurt your eyes.
Here are several solutions to help alleviate and prevent eye
strain:
1.
Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
·
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break. Do not
focus on the screen for too long while working online as a virtual
assistant.
·
Look at something 20 feet away to give your eyes
a chance to relax and refocus. This will also rejuvenate your brain.
2.
Proper Lighting
·
Ensure your workspace is well-lit with ambient
lighting to reduce screen glare.
·
Avoid glare and reflections on your screen by
positioning it away from direct light sources.
3.
Adjust Screen Settings
·
Increase font size and adjust screen brightness
and contrast for comfortable viewing. Lower your screen lighting if you are in a semi-dark or dark room. If you are in a brightly lit environment, increase
your screen lighting.
·
Use blue light filters or enable night mode in
the evening to reduce eye strain. I usually forget to set this, but it’s very helpful.
I use it on my phone when browsing with Opera Mini.
4.
Eye Exercises
·
Practice eye exercises to reduce strain, such as
blinking, rolling your eyes, and focusing on a distant object. I must confess I
forget to do this often enough, but I understand the importance.
5.
Correct Monitor Position
·
Position your monitor at eye level to reduce
neck strain.
·
Ensure the screen is about an arm’s length away
from your eyes. You will only achieve this if you have enough workspace in the
first place, and a suitable desk and chair. This brings us to the following two points related to it.
6.
Use Proper Ergonomics
·
Invest in an ergonomic chair and desk to
maintain a comfortable posture.
·
Adjust the height and angle of your chair and
monitor to reduce strain on your neck and back. Read
more on virtual assistance ergonomics here.
7.
Customized Workspace
·
Personalize your workspace to make it
comfortable and visually pleasing.
8.
Regular Eye Check-ups
·
Schedule regular eye exams to ensure you have
the correct prescription if you wear glasses.
·
Inform your eye doctor about your work habits to
get personalized advice.
9.
Blink Frequently
·
Remind yourself to blink frequently to keep your
eyes moist.
·
Consider using lubricating eye drops if your
eyes tend to get dry.
10. Take Regular Breaks
·
Schedule short breaks throughout the day to
stretch and relax your eyes.
·
Use break times to perform activities that don’t
involve staring at a screen.
11. Anti-Glare Screen
Protectors
·
Consider using anti-glare screen protectors to
minimize reflections and glare.
12. Follow the 2-Hour Rule
·
Limit continuous screen time to a maximum of two
hours, after which take a longer break.
13. Stay Hydrated
·
Drink enough water to prevent dry eyes.
·
Use a humidifier in your workspace if the air is
too dry.
14. Mindful Use of Devices
·
Avoid using electronic devices before bedtime to
promote better sleep quality.
·
Practice mindful use of screens and be conscious
of your screen time.
15. Consider Computer Glasses
·
Computer glasses with anti-reflective coating
can reduce eye strain and fatigue.
Parting Shot
Remember that individual preferences may vary, so finding what works best for you is essential. Regular breaks, proper ergonomics,
and a conscious effort to care for your eyes can significantly contribute to
reducing eye strain for full-time virtual assistants. If your eye strain persists, consult an eye care professional for personalized advice.
