5 Differences Between Social Media Influencers and Social Media Managers

Sometimes, when I tell a client that I am a social media manager, they take it to mean I am a social media influencer.

Social media influencers and social media managers are different personnel playing distinct roles in the digital landscape.

Here are five key differences between them:

1.     Role and Purpose

                                                        i.            Influencers

Influencers are individuals who have built a substantial online following based on their expertise, personality, or content. They use their influence to promote products, services or causes to their audience. An influencer can be a movie star, renowned author, popular rapper, TV presenter, member of parliament, etc.

                                                     ii.            Managers

On the other hand, social media managers are professionals responsible for creating and executing social media strategies for businesses or individuals. Their role is to manage and enhance the online presence of a brand or individual. In fact, an influencer can hire a social media manager to manage his/her social media accounts.

2.     Content Creation vs. Strategy Execution

                                                        i.            Influencers

Influencers primarily focus on creating engaging content for their audience. They produce videos, photos, or other types of media that resonate with their followers and align with the brands they collaborate with. They have a cultivated image and aim to be consistent about their messaging or whatever they stand for in the public eye.

                                                     ii.            Managers

Social media managers are more concerned with the strategic aspects of social media. They plan and implement campaigns, analyze data, manage advertising budgets, and ensure the brand's social media strategy aligns with its overall marketing goals. A social media manager primarily focuses on social media marketing.

3.     Ownership and Employment

                                                        i.            Influencers

Influencers are typically self-employed individuals who own and control their personal brand. They collaborate with brands on a contractual basis but maintain a level of independence in creating and sharing content. They are basically on their own.

                                                     ii.            Managers

Businesses, marketing agencies, or individuals usually employ social media managers to handle their social media activities. They work as part of a team and are accountable for achieving specific business objectives through social media.

4.     Audience Engagement

                                                        i.            Influencers

Influencers thrive on building a strong connection with their audience. Success is often measured by the level of engagement, including likes, comments, shares, and their overall impact on their followers.

                                                     ii.            Managers

Social media managers focus on optimizing a brand's online presence, reaching target audiences, and achieving specific business goals. While engagement is critical, their success is often measured by metrics such as conversion rates, lead generation, and overall brand awareness.

5.     Monetization Methods

                                                        i.            Influencers

Influencers monetize their online presence through brand partnerships, sponsored content, affiliate marketing, and sometimes by selling their products or services.

                                                     ii.            Managers

Social media managers are compensated through salaries, contracts, or service fees. Their primary focus is on managing and executing effective social media strategies for their clients or employers.

Parting Shot

In summary, influencers are content creators who leverage their personal brand for partnerships, while social media managers are professionals hired to strategically manage and enhance a brand's online presence. I hope these 5 points settle the confusion.
